Poetry quotes: little golden nuggets of wisdom to send you sprinting to the bookstore

Poetry is unlike any other form of language. It’s not speech. Not prose. It’s not even always natural. Sometimes it rhymes even though we don’t rhyme. But one thing it does do? It lasts.

How you break down doors, traverse barriers, say things that haven’t been said in ways that haven’t been done before. There’s nothing like you. And yet you encompass everything.

Reading quotes about poetry can change the game for so many readers. Why else do you think I’m putting this list together? I want you to read more poetry. There’s something special in there for you, I know it. And once you start, there’s no turning back. You’ll be a poetry lover in no time.

23 of the Best Tools for Writers

by Jaylynn McClendon

Which tools do you need to add to your writer’s toolbox?

In his legendary book On Writing, Stephen King says, “I want to suggest that to write to your best abilities, it behooves you to construct your own toolbox and then build up enough muscle so you can carry it with you.”

He is speaking of a metaphorical toolbox: a collection of writing skills acquired through consistent practice and reading. These are wildly important to a writer.

But are they the only tools you need to thrive?

While the writers of yesteryear only needed a quill pen, some ink, and parchment nowadays, we have gadgets to improve & enhance the writing life. These tools could greatly add to the writing process: whether in fun or practicality.

The right tools for writers can get you more more focused, save you time, and make drafting, editing, and revising easier.

Some of these tools we already own. Some, we were delighted to discover. Some we haven’t even thought of before. You don’t need all of them to become a good writer, but what if they could help? What are you willing to do to become the best writer you can be? Whether you’re thinking about publishing a book or are just writing for the love of it, these tools could benefit you.

Add one of these tools for writers to your toolbox! You won’t be disappointed.

  1. Digital Voice Recorder
the best tools for writers

Imagine this: you’re driving. The perfect sentence floats over the rolling hills outside your window and you have no chance to write it down. And no memory to cling to it.

Imagine this: you’re stuck in the plot. You don’t know how to write that scene, but it feels like you could speak it into existence.

A digital recorder is a game-changing tool for so many writers. When you’re trying to make it as a writer, you have to give it so much time and so much practice. No matter how much fun writing can be, it’s also a job of commitment. To make sure you do it, you have to actually do it.

I couldn’t recommend a digital recorder enough. It can save you time, but it can also blow open doors of possibility.

  1. Astrohaus Portable Typewriter

Distractions are all over your computer. Brain breaks are a click away. Remember that YouTube video you wanted to watch at this exact time last week? Here it is on Facebook. Tempting you. You’ll get back to writing in 3 minutes and 46 seconds. But those 3 minutes add up don’t they? And is it ever really 3 minutes?

If you only have 2 hours to write while your too-small kid is sleeping and you spend 20 of it on unrelated sites (& “essential” research), you have less time than you wanted.

With the Astrohaus, you cut out the possibility of distractions. You know you don’t need any more research, and you sure don’t need to know what your cousin Nicole is doing on the beach on a Tuesday. You need to write your book.

So get to it. This modern typewriter has cloud memory, electric charge, and a full keyboard, all weighing in at under 2 pounds. The Astrohaus is an excellent solution for those who want to focus on what they need to focus on.

  1. Smart Timer Cube

No, but seriously! Get writing!

When you realize you want to write with the time you have, you need to do it.

One of my favorite ways to do this is to set a timer that is NOT on my phone or laptop. There’s a reason smart phone companies are out here putting Willy Wonka music in their commercials: Writing beside your phone is like putting candy next to your toddler’s nutritious dinner and telling them they can’t eat it yet.

This eye-catching smart-cube timer works much like a kitchen timer, allowing you to set time limits for your writing and then alerting you when the time is up. When that thing starts ticking down low, you’ll feel like you’re in the closing minutes of a game. You better get those words out while you can.

Check out some great gift ideas for the writer in your life!

  1. Noise Cancelling Headphones

Not every writer is able to enjoy the life-giving sounds of nature while they’re working. But a quiet, sustainable environment is possible without telling everyone around you to shut up.

These noise-cancelling headphones are an excellent way to achieve a little peace and quiet wherever you are. I’d recommend some birds-chirping background sounds, a little rain, or even some lyric-less music to match the mood of what you’re writing. These can be great tools for writers who like crowded (or bad-music-playing) coffee shops or on public transportation during their commutes.

  1. Amazon Kindle Scribe
the best tools for writers who like to read

Did you know there’s a Kindle designed specifically for writers?

I know a lot of writers who have Kindles. And for a lot of different reasons. Sure, you get access to cheaper books right there in your pocket, but it’s also thanks to that handy send-to-Kindle feature. You can send files of unpublished books to your Kindle so you can consume that material just like if you had bought it from the Kindle store. There’s something enlightening about reading your book or your critique group’s books as if the manuscript was a finished product.

With the Kindle Scribe, you can write on the screen too. On regular Kindles, you have to take notes by typing on tiny touch-screen keypads, and I’d be lying if I said it gets it right most of the time. It is definitely the best e-reader for writers.

  1. The Writer’s Toolbox

Sometimes a little bit of fun is all you need to get out of a writing funk. Games like this one allow you to exercise your brain and can be a great way to get some creative juices flowing.

Play with friends or family to make a much-needed solo writing break into a social experiment that also allows you to do what you love. This is definitely among my favorite choices for best gifts for writers.

  1. Rollerball Pen

There are so many ways to get into the writing zone. And so many unique preferences to getting it done.

If you’re a person who likes to draft in pen and paper, make sure you choose a good pen! Or, in this case, the best. This pen from Scriveiner has a 24k gold finish, is smooth to the touch, and writes quite effortlessly.

  1. Standing Laptop Desk Attachment

You’re going to want to switch things up! Whether it’s because you are putting in a long day of writing or just know it’s good to use your body in different ways, working with a standing laptop desk attachment is a smart decision.

Want to wake up? Write that action scene you’ve building to? Put on new music and get the explosive job done? The best writing tools make it easier on you and allow for flexibility and keeping your mind fresh with different tactics. This checks all those boxes.

  1. Laptop Cooling Pad
laptop cooling tools for writers

If you’re one of those writers who has a dozen or more tabs open at once, you’re probably familiar with the annoying sounds that happen when your laptop overheats.

This little laptop cooling pad can help you combat that sound without having to close your beloved tabs. When placed under your laptop, this fan works to blow cool air back into it and keep it that way while you finish your work.

  1. Smart Notebook
the best tools for writers that like to write on paper

If you’re the kind of writer who has notebooks cluttering up their office, you could benefit from a tool like this one. Doodlers & artists too!

A smart notebook allows you to write or draw in a notebook like you always have, whether it’s notes, sketches, or full-blown pages, and scan it with your phone to upload it to an online platform. And when you’re done writing and scanning, you erase everything and reuse the page.

  1. Grammarly Editing Software

Just because you’re a great writer doesn’t mean you’re a great editor. And that’s okay! They’re different skills that require different viewpoints.

Software like Grammarly can clean up your writing and get it ready to give to a human editor or publishing company. This software can be helpful to even the most detail-oriented writer; there are going to be a few grammar issues you’ve missed, especially if you’re writing longer form pieces. Cover your tracks. Get Grammarly.

  1. Scrivener Software

Scrivener is a leader in word-processing tools for writers. They offer templates for screenplays, nonfiction, and fiction manuscripts and make formatting your writing easier than ever. A little bit of organization assistance can go a long way for serious writers. If you need to structure a complicated, multi-POV novel, there’s no better tool than Scrivener.

  1. Vellum Formatting Software

Self-publishing is more popular than ever. This is a valid option for writers of all skill and experience levels. If you’re looking to make real money out of your writing, whether through fiction or business nonfiction, you’re going to need to format your book professionally.

That’s where the incredibly user-friendly Vellum comes in! Format for ebook, paperback, and hardcover with this, and make sure your book appears as professionally as it reads.

  1. IBR Group Beta Reading

So often writers are in a hurry to hit the publish button that they skip out on opportunities to fix and correct big-picture problems with their work. This is why you should have someone read over your book.

While not everyone has a trusted friend that can give them helpful feedback on their writing, some companies have professional beta readers that can do just that.

Independent Book Review offers a beta reading service for writers to get their work looked at and critiqued by professional book people & readers: reviewers, booksellers, librarians, editors, and more. This group-style feedback can help authors recognize that a certain issue is cropping up for different readers and will likely appear when your book is published too. It can also reaffirm their idea that a piece of work is doing all the things they set out to do. Getting a few extra eyes on your work before sending it out to publishers could be exactly the thing you need to perfect your draft.

  1. Wix Website Builder
website tools for writers

Want to publish your work? A professional website is a must!

Your author website is a place where people can learn more about you, follow your newsletter, and buy your books. While not all writers are tech wizards, websites like WIX make building a website much easier. I’d recommend getting a domain through BlueHost so it’s extra professional!

  1. Publisher Rocket

If you plan to publish your book(s), you’re going to want to learn more about book marketing. Not only would it be nice to make a few bucks from your art, but most writers want to be read by more people.

One of the best ways to reach a large number of readers is to place your book into as many categories as possible and with as accurate and high-ranking keywords as possible. What does this mean?

Well…you know how people search on Google and Amazon for the things they want? They type in things like, “spicy romance” or “space adventure,” when they want to read things like that. Those are keywords.

But how do you know which keywords are searched often? With Publisher Rocket! This tool for writers allows you to choose the best keywords so that your book shows up on the first page of an Amazon search.

Categories are genres and subgenres. You can post your book in up to 10 categories, and Publisher Rocket helps you find those too. An essential tool for self-publishers!

  1. Kindle Unlimited Subscription
reading tools for writers

What could be more helpful for a writer than having a library in your pocket? Sure Kindle Unlimited means you can read a bunch of captivating fiction books to figure out how others pulled off books in and outside your genre, but it also gives you access to thousands of nonfiction books on topics you won’t be able to learn about in such detail just on Google.

Writing a novel about Prohibition? Read about it! Even skip to the sections that are most relevant to you! You don’t have to read the full book in order to get the essential information just a few taps away. Check out some writing & publishing books on KU while you’re at it!

  1. The Emotion Thesaurus

Transform your writing with this expanded edition of The Emotion Thesaurus. Conveying emotion effectively is something that many writers struggle with, but doing so can make or break how readers resonate with your work. This book is the ultimate show and don’t tell guide to writing emotions. Break this thing open on your writing retreat or just keep it on your desk for easy access because you never know you’re going to need it.

  1. Writing Tools: A Book on Writing Strategies

Sometimes the best writing tool is called Writing Tools. This book provides 50 short essays from one of the most popular writing teachers in America on different aspects of writing. If you’re looking for a bunch of practical tips to help you break out of writer’s block, this book is the one to do it.

  1. Before and After the Book Deal

Like sharing a coffee with a kind and witty mentor, Before and After the Book Deal is an ideally conversational guide to traditional publishing… If you’re in search of a guide that’s both intensely readable and undeniably practical (which, let’s be honest, you are), strap on your swimming cap and dive headfirst into this book. I’d offer you my copy, but there’s no way in hell I’m letting it out of my sight.”

– Joe Walters, Independent Book Review

  1. Small Presses & Independent Publishers

Here at IBR, we love indie presses. We read ’em, we review ’em, we shout ’em from the rooftops. Incredible bookish people are doing incredible bookish things and bringing extremely talented authors to everyday readers with their bold, risk-taking, entertaining work. They make beautiful books, and we’re proud to review so many of them.

If you’re a writer looking to traditionally publish in 2024 without an agent, you’re going to want to look into indie presses. This book is a resource you don’t want to do without.

  1. How to Publish a Book on Amazon

If you’re thinking about going the self-publishing route, this is the book to read. It’s got loads of practical information and walks you step-by-step through the process of doing it yourself. Doesn’t hurt that it’s got some great tips for Amazon Ads too.

I’m curious: Which are the best tools for writers that you can’t buy?

The Best E-Reader to Buy This Year

by Jaylynn Korrell

blue background white text saying "The Best e-reader to buy this year."

Transform your reading experience with the best e-reader.

What would Matilda do?

Still go to the library. Definitely.

But she’d also put one in her backpack. E-readers are gamechangers for avid readers. It’s not a breakup with physical books; it’s an opportunity to read more.

It’s dark, and you don’t want to turn on the light. Or you want to read in public without drawing attention to yourself. Or you want convenient access to your favorite books you already bought as well as brand new, cheaper ones. These are the reasons why you need the best e-reader.

But which e-reader is right for you?

With so many options to choose from, it can be difficult to find the very best e-reader. While some of you prefer to read in the middle of the night and need a screen that can accommodate that, others need something waterproof, a larger screen, or a game-playing, movie-watching, book-reading tablet.

Each e-reader comes with their own set of benefits and features, and new ones are coming out regularly. So, we…checked them out for you! And here we are, gathering the best, most popular, and up-to-date e-readers of 2024.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

Amazon kindle paperwhite is the best e-reader to buy this year

The reviews & ratings don’t lie. And I don’t either! I’ve had this e-reader for years and couldn’t be happier with it. Each year, thousands of people choose the Kindle Paperwhite, and they’re smart for doing so.

It is supremely easy on the eyes with a perfect-sized 6.8″ screen, a glare-free display, and a 10% brighter maximum setting than its previous models. Reading is easy in dark mode, and a full charge can also get you up to 10 weeks at a time.

It’s also a pretty distraction-less device! You’re using this thing to read, make notes, buy the best new books, and maybe even scroll Goodreads. So it’s all book content, all the time. Writers, reviewers, and publishing industry workers will also love that you can send galleys and unpublished books to this Kindle easily.

With this purchase, you can get the first 3 months of Kindle Unlimited free. KU subscriptions work much like a library card, giving you access to millions of titles. I especially like it for nonfiction. If I want to learn about a certain subject, I can read a ton of free literature on it quickly and without the need to actually purchase it to try. You don’t even have to read the full book with Kindle Unlimited. Just click on the chapter title and dig in.

Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition

the best e-reader for kids

E-readers are AWESOME for kids. If you want them to keep reading, give them as many opportunities to do so as you can. That definitely means physical books, but this Kindle Paperwhite Kids allows them to read without lugging a big book around and to read without keeping the light on at lights-out time. Since there’s no blue light, it’ll be more natural for them to fall asleep without the lights on. And as you know, reading to sleep is one of the best benefits of reading.

You’re also gifting them a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, and it comes with a 2-year worry-free warranty. It’s waterproof, too!

We’ve always included this product in our gifts for kids who love to read blog. There are no distractions like internet access or gaming apps, and it promotes focus by only giving them the option to read or think about books. The easy to use parental controls provide peace of mind with settings that can limit which reading options children have available to them.

  • Screen size – 6.8″ display, 300 ppi
  • Storage capacity – 8GB or 16GB
  • Battery Life – up to 10 weeks on a single charge
  • Audiobook capability – Yes (via Bluetooth)

Kobo Libra 2

kobo libra 2

There are many perks to becoming a member of your local library; one is that it gives you access to a variety of free e-books & audiobooks. That’s right, you can download e-books when you have a library card and gain access to tons of titles at no cost to you.

My library, and most likely yours, can do this through sources like Hoopla and Libby. Unlike Kindle, Kobo allows you to read those library-downloaded ebooks & audiobooks. Kobo’s got great bluetooth capabilities so you can hook them up to your earphones and listen while you do the dishes.

If you’re looking for a great e-reader that isn’t associated with Amazon, you’ll enjoy the Kobo Libra 2. This option gives you a ton of storage: up to 24,000 e-books!

  • Screen size – 7″
  • Storage capacity – 32GB
  • Battery Life – 21 Hours
  • Audiobook capability – Yes (via Bluetooth)

Amazon Fire HD Tablet

best tablet for reading

You can read well on tablets too. With a Kindle Fire, you get a great, aesthetically-pleasing reading experience, access to Hoopla and Libby apps, and access to a browsable internet. Games, movies, social media, books–this thing’s got it all.

As far as reading on a tablet goes, we think the Amazon Fire HD Tablet gives you the best reading experience. It’s around the same size as typical e-readers and has built-in speakers.

  • Screen size – 8″ display
  • Storage capacity -32GB
  • Battery Life – up to 13 hours of reading
  • Audiobook capability – Yes (via Bluetooth, headphone jack, and built-in speakers)

Nook Glowlight 4 Plus

Barnes & Noble people! Those who have memberships or those who swear by the place, go with the Nook. It matches their aesthetic really well, and it’s well-functioning with perks for members. And your eyes will thank you! This GlowLight Illumination technology is the best for reading at night, and you can even go automatic with their Nightmode feature so that it mimics the sun’s natural progression throughout the day.

You can store your ebooks across a variety of platforms when you have a Nook. This means you can read your ebooks on your iPhone, tablet, or laptop if you choose, and you can pick up from where you left off on any other device with internet access.

One more thing that sets this option apart is your ability to receive in-person support at any Barnes and Noble store. This is the perfect opportunity for people who struggle with technology to meet with a real person to help them set their e-reader up, organize their library, or how to purchase books. Since these bookstores are so popular, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a store and start this process ASAP.

  • Screen size – 7.8″ high-resolution, 300ppi glare-free display
  • Storage capacity – 32GB
  • Battery Life – up to 3 weeks of reading on a single charge
  • Audiobook capability – Yes (via bluetooth or headphone jack)

Kindle Scribe

best e-readers for writers

If you’re a writer, definitely check out the Kindle Scribe! You can send your latest work over to this device and read it as if your audience was reading it, and then you can use VoiceView screen reader to use text-to-speech to read it out loud. And you can take notes and scribble scenes and ideas with the pen instead of typing in the sometimes difficult-to-use keyboard feature on the reader-focused Kindles. It’s one of the best gifts for writers!

  • Screen size – 10.2″ display
  • Storage capacity – 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB options
  • Battery Life – up to 12 weeks on a single charge
  • Audiobook capability – Yes (via Bluetooth)

15 Elite White Bookshelves For Your Book Collection

by Jaylynn McClendon

The words "15 Elite White Bookshelves for Your Book Collection" on top of a backdrop of books on a shelf

White bookshelves, clean slate.

I love what a white bookshelf can do for a room and a book collection. It gives you so many possibilities: minimalist, matching, attention-seeking. But finding the right one can be tricky.

Luckily, we’ve found ’em.

Whether you’re looking to house hundreds of titles or just add a little lit to a boring room, these shelves can bring your vision to life. Small bookshelves and tall ones are listed here. Modern bookshelves and cheap bookshelves and ones for your kids, office, and beyond. I know you’ll find what you’re looking for.

(Everything on Independent Book Review has been independently selected by a very picky group of people. As Amazon and Etsy affiliates we may earn a commission on items you purchase through our links.)

  1. Classic 6-Tier White Bookshelf
tall white bookshelf with books and bookends

If you have the space for it you really can’t go wrong with this standard white bookshelf. It’s a good option to buy in multiples and fill a wall in your home or office. Lined up together, this bookshelf design allows you to store a large amount of books while still contributing to a clean and organized look.

  1. Small 3-Tier Bookcase
short three-tier white bookshelves

But you don’t always have big enough walls! This short (but pretty wide!) bookshelf of the same model can be lined up similarly to the tall 6 tier option, but you can also just keep one beside your bed for specific night-time and bathroom reading. (I recommend nonfiction & humor!)

  1. Horizontal Sectional Bookshelf

This wide bookshelf is a great way to display books while also adding some surface space to your home. You can top this white bookshelf off with a television, photos, or even more books!

  1. Standing Tree Bookshelf with Storage
tall tree white bookshelves

The tree bookshelf is one of the more popular modern bookshelf options on the internet, and we were pleased to see it in white. It’s a cool and funky way to display your favorite titles.

  1. 5 Tier Off-Center Bookshelf
jagged geometric white bookshelves with books inside it

This off-center stacked bookshelf reminds me a lot of…Independent Book Review! The site you’re on RIGHT NOW.

When we first started IBR in April 2018, we had an off-center shelf in our studio apartment and lugged it across the country with. We loved it so much we lugged it across the country and made it our company logo.

In other words, maybe we are partial to this cool-looking design! It’s modern and draws attention to the books as a fixture in your apartment or living room.

  1. White Ladder Bookshelf
ladder white bookshelves

Who doesn’t love a ladder bookshelf? This white one mixes classic and clean vibes together and are a hit among book lovers.

  1. Leaning Bookshelf
leaning white bookshelves

White bookshelves like these can be used to hold more than just books, making them convenient options for readers who also love a good knick knack. They’re also a nice option for people who like to showcase plants (like succulents!) alongside their favorite books.

  1. Tall and Skinny White Bookshelf

Taking advantage of vertical space is a great way to showcase a wide variety of books without taking up unnecessary room. The top of the wall is often unused space so why not fill it with some badass books?

  1. Short White Bookshelf
plain white small bookshelf

Small white bookshelves like this one look great in corners, up against desks or in bedrooms. This one doubles great as a nightstand.

  1. Rotating Bookshelf
rotating white bookshelves

Let’s be honest: spinning stuff is more fun! 😂 If I see a prize wheel, you know I’m spinning it. Same goes for being in bookstores. You never know what (literary) prize is waiting for you on the other side.

But it’s also practical! You can separate your small-ish collection of different genres well with this rotating shelf. It’s a great space-saver and is fun for adults and kids who love to read.

  1. Large 5-Tier Bookshelf

I love the added bookshelf legs underneath this one. It gives the bookshelf some added height and could fit other stuff beneath it, like shoes.

  1. Short 2-Tier Bookshelf
short 2-Tier white bookshelf

This no-fuss bookshelf option is a great way to focus more on the titles you’re featuring and less on the appearance of the shelves. It’s a classic option for people who want to store a lot of titles in a small and concentrated space. Added bonus: it’s a cheap bookshelf!

  1. Tree Bookshelf (with two sizes!)

This tree bookshelf allows you to make the most sense of your space. No matter if you’re in need of a short tree or a tall one (or both, like the picture above!), this shelf is a great modern bookshelf.

  1. 3-Tier Tall Bookshelf with Storage

Hey, wait!

Bookshelves don’t always have to be all about books! Let’s get practical with our space. If you need a bit of hidden storage (like treasure maybe? Or umbrellas?), this bookshelf still has three tiers and enough room for a good amount of books without it being the focal point of the piece.

  1. Miniature Lattice Bookshelf
small white bookshelves

This little lattice option is a quiet favorite. It’s an especially nice shelf to add to a desk or counter top. (And just imagine draping some plant leaves down it!)

Need any tips for filling your new white bookshelves? Here are the best books we read in 2023.

21 Edgar Allan Poe Gifts for Fans. of the Notorious Writer

Don’t look under the floorboards.

It’s not hard to understand why people are so drawn to Edgar Allan Poe. Considering that he died (quite mysteriously!) over 100 years ago and we’re still reading his spooky prose speaks volumes about the impact he’s had on horror and gothic fiction.

Poe lovers are drawn to all things spooky and strange, so when you’re looking for the best Edgar Allan Poe gifts, you’re allowed to get a little weird.

For instance, this list contains a lifelike raven skull, fingerless gloves, and even some home decor options that will give any space a welcome sinister vibe. We feel confident you’ll find something that your book lover will be excited to unwrap for any occasion.

So check out these awesome Edgar Allan Poe gifts!

(Everything on Independent Book Review has been selected by a very picky group of people. As affiliates we may earn a commission on items you purchase through our links.)

  1. “Cool Story, Poe” T-Shirt

Every true Poe fan should have his face on a shirt. This one plays on the saying “Cool story, bro” and features the master of the macabre himself, along with the infamous raven. It comes in a few colors, but this red one really sticks out to us. If you like this one, make sure to check out some of our other highly recommended book shirts.

  1. Edgar Allan Poe Candle

Cardamom, absinthe, sandalwood. While I can’t say for sure that this candle smells like the author (which might be for the best!), it can bring a cool literary vibe to whichever space you choose. I like this gift for English teachers especially so that we can turn off the lights, light the candle, and let a Poe audiobook spook your children into Nevermore.

  1. The Raven Tote Bag

How else are you going to carry your books? This tan, toned-down Poe tote makes it so that you can hold your gothic fiction indie bookstore picks right beside your fresh produce from the market.

  1. Edgar Allan Poe Collected Works

No Poe fan is satisfied until they delve into the weirdest and spookiest of Poe’s works. Poe was prolific, and some of the lesser-known stories are some of his best. That’s why having a collection of all of Poe’s work is essential for die-hard Poe fans. And it helps that this gorgeous leather-bound book looks so great in bookshelves.

  1. Poems Cabinet

This rustic cabinet of curiosity features some of Poe’s most famous works and is the perfect place to put little knick knacks and small succulents. Hung on the wall, this little cabinet can become quite the statement piece for Poe fans.

  1. Edgar Allan Poe Mug

A good mug is a gift that readers will definitely get use out of. Cold days can be made even more cozy with a spooky story and their hot beverage of choice. Try giving this gift with something like a packet of novel teas to keep with the literary vibe.

  1. Poe Fingerless Gloves

Do you love gothic fiction? Then wear it! Rep these super cool Poe fingerless gloves and look like the macabre master you are. And of course, stay warm–but still have phone access! I love the prose included on the gloves, but the raven at the thumb might be my favorite part.

  1. Edgar Allan Poe Secular Candle

These prayer candles are notorious for featuring some of our favorite celebrities, and thankfully that includes writers as well. This is the perfect spooky decorative item to light in Fall months and illuminate a space with Poe’s face.

  1. Raven Skull Figurine

“The Raven” is one of Poe’s most famous works, and this little raven skull figurine is a perfectly odd ode to the poem. It would look great (and a little weird!) on the desk or mantel of any Poe lover’s home or office.

  1. Edgar Allan Poe Socks
cozy edgar allan poe gifts

Help keep your Poe lover’s feet comfy and warm, and make them laugh while you’re at it! There’s something silly AND cool about these Edgar Allan Poe socks. I can picture my high school English teacher rocking a pair of these any day of the week. It’s definitely one of my favorite inexpensive Edgar Allan Poe gifts.

  1. Edgar Allan Poe Bobblehead
edgar allan poe gifts

Oh, you’re writing a horror novel and need some creepy inspiration? Plop Edgar down on your writing desk and watch him judge you each time you take a procrastination break. Great for teachers too!

  1. The Tell-Tale Heart” Whiskey Glasses
edgar allan po gifts for drinkers

“Almighty God!–no, no! They heard!–they suspected!–they knew!–they were making a mockery of my horror!–this, I thought, and this I [drink]!” One of Poe’s most popular short stories, “The Tell-Tale Heart,” is printed on these cool whiskey glasses to pair with other gifts for Poe lovers. Drink whiskey out of it or Poe’s favorite: brandy!

  1. The Little Book of Edgar Allan Poe

Even the most well-versed Poe-heads will find something unique and memorable in this collection of quotes and excerpts from Poe and the writers who admire him. It’s inexpensive, small, and a really unique Edgar Allan Poe gift that will give the Poe lover in your life plenty of fodder for additional admiration.

  1. Poe Wall Art

Poe has so many great quotes, but this one shows off his poignant side. Sometimes being a fan of Edgar Allan Poe means a lot of spooky stuff, but this time, it’s thought-provoking, beautiful, and relevant to everyday life.

  1. The Raven” inspired scarf

cozy edgar allan poe gifts

I’d love this scarf even if it didn’t have “The Raven” printed on it! Its sleek silver-black color makes for a great accent piece to both light and dark clothing, and it reminds people around you that you could “fill [them] with fantastic terrors never felt before.”

  1. The Raven” chapstick
useful edgar allan poe gifts

Hello, stocking stuffers! Want to give the Poe lover in your life something related to Poe but don’t want to break the bank to do it? This chapstick is practical and cool and might just show up at your window lattice once upon a midnight dreary.

  1. “Edgar Allan Poet” Magnetic Poetry Kit

If your Poe lover has a way with words, they’ll have a lot of fun with a gift like this. This magnetic poetry kit is a great item to have on your fridge or even their class’s smart board. String words together and make something beautiful, terrifying, or both. The non-Poe magnetic poetry kit is featured in our gifts for writers.

  1. Engraved Poe Bookmark
edgar allan poe gifts for book lovers

It’s kind of a given that if you know someone who loves Edgar Allan Poe, they like to bask in the benefits of reading. So what better gift to give them than an engraved Edgar Allan Poe inspired bookmark?

  1. Nevermore Kids Book

While not everything Poe has written is suitable for children, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get your child into his work. This fun Poe-inspired children’s book is a great gift to give to your child who likes to read.

  1. Edgar Allan Poe Jigsaw Puzzle
Edgar Allan Poe gifts

How cool is this? This 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle features some of Poe’s most popular book and story covers, and some of them you may not have even seen before. People who love Poe will have a great time putting this one together.

  1. Edgar Allan Poe Funko Pop!

These little figurines have become really popular in the last fews years, and if you’ve got a collector on your hands, they’ll jump for joy (or terror) at this little Edgar Allan Poe Funko Pop! Younger Poe lovers will especially like this one.

the best bookstores in san Francisco

The best bookstores in San Francisco are indie!

So you’re going to San Francisco…

15 Small Bookshelf Ideas for Tight Spaces & More Books

by Jaylynn McClendon

Looking for a great small bookshelf?

Not every room requires a massive book display. Your library does, or whatever you call the coolest room in your house, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have books in other places.

Bedrooms, spare rooms, kitchens, and offices are all excellent places to put a smaller bookshelf to house specific genres, new purchases, and gently-used favorites. Small bookshelves are also great if you’re living in a small space. And believe me, i know a thing or two about living in small spaces.

When you’re a book lover with a passion for reading & buying books in a studio apartment, you have to stop stacking books on your desk and get the best small bookshelf.

Ready to add to the literary vibe of your home or office? Here are some small bookshelves that we love.

Are any of these 15 small bookshelves the one for you?

(Everything on Independent Book Review has been selected by a very picky group of people. As affiliates we may earn a commission on items you purchase through our links.)

  1. 3-Tiered Wooden/Industrial Bookshelf
industrial small bookshelf

We love this small bookshelf! It combines modern and industrial design, meaning it looks great AND proves to be versatile. This image features a lot of extra stuff, which you can definitely do with gemstones, plants, and more, but I like it most because it can store a good amount of books, it doesn’t need bookends, and it looks great on wooden floors.

  1. Small Geometric Bookshelf

This little bookshelf can really add some literary pizzazz to a room! It looks great on nightstands or coffee tables, and it’s perfect for those few books that you want to draw extra attention to.

  1. Classic 3-Tiered Wooden Bookshelf
a classic small bookshelf for your home

This is a smaller version of the most classic bookshelf on the internet. It looks just like it, but it has three shelves instead of 7-9. Its sophisticated wooden look makes a good place to place any genre of book, but I think a shelf full of classics would be most dreamy here.

  1. Rotating Circular Wooden Bookshelf
rotating small bookshelf

There’s something about a rotating bookshelf that just makes you want to pick up every book. This one is at a great low height and doesn’t take up much space horizontally either, so it’s a great option to double as a side table.

  1. Funky Wooden/Industrial Bookshelf

Looking for something a little funky? This bookcase doesn’t hold a huge amount of books, but it looks great & unique in offices, bedrooms, and bigger bathrooms when you need a few standout books by your side. Like this with wooden floors too!

  1. White Bookshelf with Lattice
white small bookshelf

We love this white bookcase as an outdoor book storing solution or as a kid’s bookshelf. It’s thin, lightweight, and the lattice on the sides gives it a different vibe than some of the other shelving options.

  1. Desktop Book Stand
very small bookshelf ideas

And the award for smallest bookshelf on this list goes to…

This tidy little shelf works great on desks, dressers, and side tables. Those who are prone to using books for research will get a lot out of this one, but it’s also for those who want a small collection of options for your varied nighttime reading.

  1. Hanging Bookshelf

When you really want to save space, look up! Elevate the eye-levels in your room and bookify your space with books on the walls. These hanging bookshelves are a great way to keep your books on display without taking up ANY floor space.

  1. Small White Bookshelf

This small white bookcase is among the most popular bookshelves on the internet. Your books will stand out on this shelf, and you have plenty of options to decorate it and make it your own.

  1. Interesting Hanging Bookshelf

This is the most unique small bookshelf I found! Rather than setting your books on the shelf, this display allows you to hang just a few. It’s a conversation piece and thus a great spot to put your favorite or most talked-about books.

  1. Long Wooden Book Display

Each room is different. Each person’s perfect bookshelf is different. If you’re looking for a small bookshelf that’s more short than skinny, this long wooden one is an awesome choice. It’s great for rooms with low head-space like an attic loft, and you can fit an impressive amount of books in it.

  1. Wooden Bookshelf

This simple, 34-inch bookshelf is versatile and sleek. I love the openings on the side so that you can see portions of the end-covers even when their spines are showing in the front. It can squeeze between tight spaces and do an efficient job of displaying a good amount of books.

  1. Collapsing Bookshelf

Looking for a bookcase that gives you a little flexibility? This collapsing bookshelf can do just that. It’s a great option if you want to move your book display from room to room often, or if you only want to have it up for certain occasions or times of the year. It also fits neatly into corners if you want it to stick around all year.

  1. Standing Bookshelf

This slightly taller standing bookcase is a great way to store a decent amount of books without taking up too much horizontal space. It helps that it has this cool tree design with even more storage space underneath too.

  1. Small Metal Bookshelf
